- forms multicellular complex: yes
- complex name: fruiting body with sporangioles and spores
- complex color: golden yellow
- further description: Tough, easily peelable slimy coating. Sporangiole are spherical to oval; crowded, densely in clusters, golden yellow colored, small, bear a striking similarity to Sorangium. Myxospores are short, thick, often bean-shaped, non-refractile, combined with 2 or 1 refractile granules, 1.7-2.2 µm long (usually about 2 µm) and 0.95-1.4 µm thick (usually about 1 µm). Sporangioles with distinct rough shells. Swarms often in oscillating waves. Sizes may differ on distinct cultivation media.

Freshly grown Micrococcus luteus cells serve as food bacteria for the myxobacteria. The M. luteus cells are harvested from complex medium such as nutrient agar or broth, and mixed with sterile water to yield a paste. For example, a pellet after centrifugation is mixed with about the same volume of sterile water. Streak lines or a cross of the bacterial paste onto the agar s
